Artistic Director Job Description

Founded in 2005, the Pittsburgh Girls Choir (PGC) provides a supportive community committed to artistic excellence through an exemplary music education program for girls in first through twelfth grades. The PGC welcomes girls of all races, ethnicities and socioeconomic backgrounds, using a sliding tuition scale and need-based scholarships. The PGC also supports an adult women’s choir (Women of Song), community outreach, and a summer workshop.

The artistic director provides the artistic vision of the Pittsburgh Girls Choir and is responsible for the leadership and direction of every aspect of the performances by its choirs. The artistic director reports to the board of directors and works in conjunction and in consultation with the executive director. This is a 3/4 time position with a salary range of $50,000-$60,000 based on experience.

Artistic Management

·      Provides overall artistic leadership and direction to the chorus

·      Plans, manages, and enacts recruitment and auditions

·      Selects and evaluates annually choir members

·      Supervises all artistic aspects in the choice of repertoire and selection of venues

·      Selects and supervises all artistic personnel

·      Supervises all rehearsals and concerts, both self-produced and run-outs

·      Directs rehearsals with Concentio, Via, and Chamber Choir

·      Supervises the music literacy educational program 

·      Supervises any recording activities

·      Produces concert programs in conjunction with the executive director

·      Prepares scores for chorus, orchestra, and soloists

·      Assists in concert program books creation with executive director 

·      Participate in fundraising initiatives established by the executive director and board

·      Participates with executive director in fee negotiation for artists and other personnel

·      Solicits run-out concerts from presenters

·      Cultivates collaborative community with artistic team

·      Collaborates with executive director and staff in creating and implementing Concentio tour and/ Via mini-tour

Board Relations

·      Presents bimonthly reports to the executive committee and the full board regarding the status of the artistic programs and projects

·      Attends committee meetings that require representation of the artistic aspects of the organization

·      Participates in fundraising activities

Public Relations

·      Serves as the official spokesperson for the organization

·      Participates in community activities that further the name recognition of the chorus

·      Represents the Chorus in all media appearances

·      Participates in musical and professional organizations locally, nationally, and internationally

·      Collaborates with management in developing marketing campaigns and publicity for the chorus

Financial Management

·      Develops annually a comprehensive artistic plan that in collaboration with the executive director provides the basis for the annual budget

·      Follows the approved annual budget for the programs

·      Collaborates in the preparation of grant applications
